With the right kind of stretching, you can increase your flexibility and decrease the risk of any serious injury or pain in that particular area.

However, when you are doing these poses, try to listen to your body and understand if you are feeling a stretch or some kind of pain.

With a stretch, it may feel a little sore for a while, but eventually it will feel like the release of a tension. However, if you feel a sharp pain while doing the pose, stop immediately and consider another stretch that may be more comfortable for your body type.

The following are some truly effective yoga poses that will help you stretch, strengthen your hips and relieve back pain too.

#1-The Upward-facing Dog Pose

This pose can help in stretching your abdomen muscles, open up your chest and engage your back. Lie flat on the floor and keep your palms facing down in the middle of your ribs. Draw your legs together and try pressing the top portion of your feet towards the floor. Then, using the strength of your back, lift your chest from the floor. Remember not to use the strength of your hands while doing so. Try and hold this position for five to 10 breaths and repeat as required.

#2-The Downward-facing Dog Pose

This is a classic yoga pose with exceptional benefits. It targets your back extensors and the large muscles that form your lower back, supports your spine and gives you the strength to stand and lift heavy objects.

Start on the hands and knees by keeping your hands a little ahead of your shoulders. Press back, raise your knees from the ground and lift your tailbone towards the roof. You can also gently push your heels towards the floor. This pose can be repeated five to seven times.

#3-The Upward Forward Bend Pose

This exercise is great to release the tension on tight shoulders. It stretches the back muscles and hamstrings and is also known as the forward fold.

Stand straight and keep your knees loose and feet separated as per your shoulder’s distance. As you exhale, bend forward by hinging your waist and try reaching the floor. You can repeat this particular pose five to 10 times. When you are doing it for the last time, remember to hold the pose for about five to 10 breaths.

#4-The Triangle Pose

This is a great pose to strengthen legs and back muscles. Begin the pose by standing straight with both feet together. Then, take the left foot three to four feet away and turn it at an angle of 45 degrees.

By turning your chest to the side, open the pose and put your left arm towards the ground and right arm up in the air. Stretch as much as possible while breathing deeply. Hold the position for around five to 10 breaths and then move on to the other side.

#5-The Cat and Cow Pose

This is one of the highly recommended poses for a sore and aching back. It helps to loosen the back muscles so it can be a part of your yoga routine or a warm up for any other workout as well.

Start in an all-fours position and then move towards the cat pose by arching your back and slowly pressing your spine up. Hold this position for a few seconds and then move on to the cow pose.

This is done by scooping your spine inwards and lifting your head while pressing the shoulder blades backwards. If you move back and forth in the cat and cow pose, you can relax your back muscles and release tension.

#6-The Child’s Pose

Though it looks like a pose where you are resting, the child’s pose can be a great stress-buster and can be done at the end of a long day.

It also helps to elongate your back and relieve any tension or pain. Start the pose on all-fours with arms stretched forward. Sit back on your glutes and rest a little above without touching your heels. This can be repeated as many times as required for a soothing stretch.

#7-The Pigeon Pose

This can seem a little challenging for new yoga learners, but it can definitely mastered with time. Start the position with the downward facing dog and keep your feet together.

Take your left knee in the front and take it out so that the left leg is bent and is perpendicular to the right knee. Keep the right leg straight at the back behind you.

Then, slowly pull the back leg away from the ground and towards your back. You can hold this position if possible and then switch to the other side.

#8-The Camel Pose

This is another effective pose to provide comfort for your back pain. To get started, kneel on your mat and place your hands on your hips. Keep your knees in line with your shoulders and ensure that the soles of you feet are in such a way that they face the ceiling. Using your hands, try and lengthen your back pelvis and take the tailbone towards the pubis.

Slowly begin to arch your back and move your hands from your hips to your heels without losing balance. Try and maintain this posture for 30 seconds to one minute while breathing calmly.

Various studies have shown the positive effects of yoga to reduce back pain as it emphasizes on stretching and enhances flexibility of your body. Many studies have also proven that yoga can be way more effective in the long term than usual care for back pain and it can increase back strength and function to a great extent.
